Cash For Gold Scam

LONGMONT — Police are looking for two men suspected of bilking $3,000 from a Longmont resident by promising gold bars in exchange for cash, according to reports.

The woman reported on Thursday that a stranger who offered to sell her gold bars in the Walmart Supercenter on the 2500 block of Main Street, according to police. The woman told police a man approached her inside a store and offered her gold bars for $20,000. She initially declined, but then watched as another person apparently bought gold from the man. She then changed her mind and took the man to her bank and gave him $3,000, but did not receive any gold. Police suspect the person she saw buying gold was part of the scheme.

The woman said one of the men was a dark-skinned Hispanic man who was wearing a cowboy hat and brown plaid shirt.

She told police she dropped the men off on north Main Street during the lunch hour Thursday and that one walked toward the dollar store and the other toward 3 Margaritas.

Police warned that “you should never buy gold from someone in the parking lot of a business,” according to a release on the suspected scam.
