Timothy W. Dixon, 45, of Florence, S.C., and Travis A. Brumbalough, 25, of Crussville, Tenn., were arrested and charged with first-degree theft of property after trying to make a getaway on a pair of motorized shopping carts they took from a Walmart located in the 1700 block of South College Street at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday.
A store employee called police after observing Dixonand Brumbalough, who are related, leaving the store parking lot riding the carts, Dawson said.
“They were driving the carts down the street down Longleaf (Drive) where they were caught near the intersection of Donahue Drive,” Dawson said. “One of the suspects claimed to have purchased the cart, while the other suspect stated that he’d just gotten tired of walking.”
Police said one of the scooter suspects was riding on the road; the other, on the sidewalk.
As officers closed in on Brumbalough, he fled on foot but was apprehended after a short chase, Dawson said. Dixon was taken into custody without incident, Dawson said.
The motorized shopping carts, intended for use by physically impaired shoppers, have been returned to the store.
