CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. (KCRA) – A Citrus Heights man is in custody after police say he choked his infant in front of officers in the parking lot of a Walmart.
Police said Daniel Graf, 32, met his estranged wife in the store’s parking lot in Citrus Heights on Friday evening so he could see their 3-month-old child.
Graf and his estranged wife began arguing over child custody arrangements, and the woman called police, authorities said.
When officers arrived, they started speaking with Graf as he was holding the baby. During the conversation, Graf started strangling and choking the child, according to authorities.
One of the officers applied a department-approved sleeper hold on Graf, who went unconscious, police said. Officers said Graf continued to strangle the child as he was being rendered unconscious.
The infant was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, police said.
Graf was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide, causing a child to suffer physical pain and on an outstanding warrant.
