COLUMBUS, Ind. — A Columbus man sustained a “significant puncture wound” after stabbing himself with a fishing knife this morning at the east-side WalMart.

The 32-year-old man was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment after police found him with a stab wound in his torso.

Columbus Police Patrolmen Steve Long and Zach Burbrink responded to the store at 5 a.m. and found the man with blood on his shirt leaning up against the side of the building near the entrance to the grocery area.

The man used a fishing knife he got in the store to stab himself inside the store, according to police. The knife was located by the store’s customer service center, and there was a trail of blood from the center to one of the cash registers.

Police have not determined why the man stabbed himself, but they think he was talking on a phone at the time.

The man’s name was not released. The Republic does not usually cover incidents involving self-inflicted harm unless the incident occurs in a public place.
