Bullet In The Head

I work as a cashier at Wal-Mart. Today during my shift, I had a memorable encounter. He was a middle-aged man wearing a T-shirt which said “He Died For Me”, a baseball cap with a Bible verse on it, and a large silver cross around his neck.

As soon as it was his turn to check out, he wasted no time in telling me his first and last name and saying, “I am a living witness to the Lord Jesus Christ.” As I was checking him out, he then began to tell me that he had been SHOT IN THE HEAD and that he had survived with God’s help. He even made it a point to lean down and show me his head, and indeed there was a scar there.
I am not a religious person, so I was feeling slightly uncomfortable at this point with all the preaching and praising. But still, he was a polite guy, and I didn’t want to just say nothing at all. So at several times during his sermon, I tried to come up with polite comments to draw him away from the subject of religion, but no matter what I said, he could relate it to Jesus. After my second effort, I just shut up and smiled politely and let him go on and on… and on.

After I rang him up and he paid, my final words to him were, “Have a nice day!” to which he replied, “Everyday’s a great day when you’re alive and praising the Lord!”

Later, I informed a co-worker of how aggressively I’d just been preached to. She asked, “Was it the guy with the bullet in his head?” And that was how I learned that the guy is a fairly regular customer, and he always feels the need to spread the gospel. In fact, he spreads it so much that several of the CSMs, upon recognizing him, will go up to the cashier he’s chosen and engage them in conversation, so that he will not interrupt to preach. Unfortunately for me, it was a busy Friday night and no one noticed until it was too late.
